With winter here and our first icy rain of the season hitting Chicago today, I’ve been thinking about runway surface conditions. Ice, snow, water, the deadly black ice…all of these can affect runway usage and require extra vigilance from pilots.
But as usual, ‘rugged’ runway conditions here have nothing on some parts of the world. Russia in particular is notorious for both exceedingly tough conditions and a devil-may-care attitude towards dealing with them.
To illustrate, enjoy this short video of an AN-24 is trying to take off from somewhere in Siberia.
I can’t even imagine. It’s like a monster truck rally with propellors. Just wow.
